Rescuing a Condemned Boiler

This Burnham 4F Boiler was condemned by the State of Wisconsin after an inspection found the mud legs scaled beyond the stay bolts.  The owner considered replacing the boiler.  Two weeks after contacting Wisconsin Mechanical Company the boiler was in operable condition and passed inspection saving this owner nearly $40,000.  This boiler has been on a Wisconsin Mechanical water treatment program since the clean up.

A Good Water Treatment Program

BEFORE

If your cooling tower looks anything like the pictures above you are losing efficiency and should consider reevaluating your water treatment program.  Wisconsin Mechanical took over this cooling tower treatment two years ago.  See the results below…

Adding an Economizer

We installed a Cain stack economizer at Leinenkugel’s Brewery in Chippewa Falls Wisconsin on a 350 HP Iron Fireman high pressure steam boiler with Gordon Piatt gas/oil burner.  This installation uses the RTR series economizer with individually replaceable tubes, stainless steel interior and bypass with a 10 gauge carbon steel exterior and 2” of insulation.
With this installation, waste heat is used to heat boiler feed water.  With a 100 degree drop in the flue gas temperature and 30 rise in the boiler feed water temperature, this boiler is capable of handling loads on its own.  Before installing the economizer, a second boiler was required for the same load. S Most significantly, the application of this should have no problem beating original Wisconsin Mechanical estimates for pay back on this installation of 14 months.
Every site is surveyed for each economizer installation.  After the survey an engineer will review the information and generate an estimate with a report detailing the estimated pay back for each installation.  To have a survey completed for your installation contact Wisconsin Mechanical Company today!

Updating Equipment to Improve Efficiency

BEFORE

This Iron Fireman boiler/burner package originally installed in 1973 at St. Josephs Hospital in Chippewa Falls WI was in need of updating.  The original burner had difficulty firing on oil making it unreliable at times.  The Iron Fireman burner was removed and a Gordon Piatt F18 gas/oil burner was installed.  This new Gordon Piatt burner is capable of firing at a maximum natural gas input of 23,000 cubic feet per hour or 150 gallons per hour of steam atomized fuel oil.  The original burner was clocked at 2/3 of the boiler’s actual capacity.  With the Gordon Piatt burner the boiler is being fired at capacity allowing for one boiler to be fired when both had to fire together to maintain the load.

Saving Taxpayers' Money

These Kewanee Scotch Marine Boilers in the Eau Claire School District were considered for replacement during a remodel project.  After evaluating the boilers and hiring Wisconsin Mechanical to convert these boilers from steam to hot water, retube the boilers and install new Gordon-Piatt gas/oil burners, the project saved the school district $1.1 million.
